Why focus on behaviors?
Behaviors are what produce results. By identifying and defining the behaviors that lead to desired outcomes, we can effectively create better conditions and reinforce those behaviors, while simultaneously reducing unwanted behaviors that hinder those outcomes. Through behavioral analysis, leaders can learn to influence the motivation behind these behaviors.

Our approach
SAFE – How We Apply OBM in Practice
Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) is based on research in behavioral psychology that helps us understand and influence behavior. In order to identify and reinforce desired behaviors in our daily work, we need to gain a deeper understanding of human behavior and the tools that can help us achieve long-term behavioral change in our organizations.
At Behaviour Design Group, we have developed the SAFE model—which helps organizations implement OBM in four simple steps. With SAFE, we apply the science behind OBM in a simple and effective way that delivers measurable results for our clients.
Study
Our work begins by establishing the organization’s overall goals and desired outcomes. We identify the specific areas and situations within the organization that have the greatest impact on the desired outcome. In this step, we define the key behaviors that need to increase, as well as the competing behaviors that must decrease in order to achieve the desired outcome.
Analyze
In the next step, we conduct behavioral analyses to understand why leaders and employees act the way they do. Using these insights, we design both the necessary conditions and reinforcing measures to improve the behavior of both leaders and employees. This usually involves organizational factors such as structure, the right tools, and communication. Based on these analyses, we create an action plan for the change process.
Change
We are initiating the change process within the organization with the aim of activating and reinforcing the key behaviors outlined in the action plan. At the same time, we are working to reduce the competing behaviors. Throughout the change process, we conduct ongoing behavioral assessments. An important part of the change process is training leaders in behavioral analysis-based leadership and skills such as feedback and active listening, which are crucial for leading change according to the OBM method.
Impact Review
In the final step, we evaluate the change process and the implementation of OBM according to the SAFE model. Behavioral metrics (leading indicators) provide us with real data on how successfully we have managed to activate and reinforce behaviors within the organization. When these metrics are high and stable, we can review the impact goals (lagging indicators), such as the number of accidents, sales figures, the number of innovations, or perceived psychological safety.

What is the difference between behavior-based safety (BBS) and Organizational Behavior Management (OBM)?
Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) is an approach within OBM where we focus on safety culture by promoting safe behaviors and thereby measurably reducing the number of accidents and near misses. BBS follows the same change process as OBM, with the difference that the goal is specifically to improve safety and strengthen safety culture. Our BBS projects also involve creating favorable conditions for safe behaviors by analyzing and influencing organizational, competency-related, and structural conditions.
