Challenge
The construction industry has long been aware of the challenges associated with macho culture and exclusionary behavior, but has not succeeded in bringing about real change. At the same time, it has become clear that effective leadership and an inclusive work environment are crucial for attracting young people to the industry. The goal is to create a high-performing organization where everyone, regardless of gender or ethnicity, feels welcome.
The construction group decided to take on this challenge with the goal of creating a more inclusive culture and thereby becoming a more attractive employer.
Strategy
Behaviour Design Group based its work on our SAFE model, and the initiative began with an assessment of the company’s existing culture. The focus was on identifying both inclusive and exclusive behaviors present in the workplace. Based on the assessment, three key behaviors were selected as the foundation for the change process:
- Give each other positive feedback on your work
- Be open to and show appreciation for new perspectives and suggestions
- Always say hello and show interest in your colleagues
Based on an analysis of the conditions that fostered these behaviors, an action plan was developed with the goal of increasing these key behaviors through leadership training, workshops, and positive reinforcement. The focus was on creating a more inclusive culture where everyone felt welcome and valued.
Results
The results showed a clear improvement in how employees perceived the work environment, and employees felt that there was greater openness and a more positive attitude within the company following the initiative. Among other things, the initiative led to the following results:
- Behaviors related to listening to and helping one another increased by 39%
