Safety Culture at the Hagalund Depot
Project Start
2025

Assignment
Establish a stronger safety culture and reduce in accidents at Hagalund's train depot.
Results
- 123% more safe behaviours
- 0 accidents and 0 incidents related to risk areas.
Challenge
At the Hagalund Depot in Solna—one of Northern Europe’s largest depots—several organisations work side by side every day. This creates a complex work environment where many actors share the same spaces and risks, and where differences in work methods, priorities, and safety procedures can arise.
The goal was clear: to strengthen the shared safety culture and reduce accidents related to common risks.
Strategy
In collaboration with Jernhusen and the depot’s major operators, a joint, behaviour-based safety (BBS) programme was established.
The focus was on:
- agree on the most critical shared risks
- define specific, safe behaviours in everyday life
- ensure the right conditions in the work environment
- Activate leaders at all levels to monitor and reinforce these behaviours
Particular emphasis was placed on behaviours related to visibility and the safe handling of vehicles in the rail yard. At the same time, the conditions necessary to put these safe behaviours into practice were ensured, for example through clear procedures, environmental adjustments, and standardised work methods.
Leadership played a crucial role in the change. Managers at all levels were trained to activate, monitor, and reinforce these behaviours in their day-to-day work.
The result was a shared approach that everyone stood behind—across organisational boundaries.
Results
👉 +123% increase in safe behaviours compared to the baseline.
In the most critical risk situations at the Hagalund Depot, employees now act safely more than twice as often as they did before the change initiative.
👉 0 accidents and 0 incidents related to these high-risk situations during the change period—a clear decrease compared to the average of previous years.
👉 A significantly strengthened safety culture.
Both managers and employees perceive a clear improvement in how safety is prioritised, discussed, and implemented in day-to-day operations at the depot.
A strong example of what happens when collaboration, a focus on behaviour, and leadership go hand in hand.
The work now continues to integrate behaviour-based safety into regular processes and follow-up procedures, to ensure a long-term and sustainable cultural change.
