Safety Culture: What Is It, Really?
In this video, Erik Matton, CEO of Behaviour Design Group, explains some of the key principles of building a stronger safety culture. The video was produced in collaboration with Prevent.
It’s hard for most people to give a simple answer to what safety culture is.
“Coming home from work,” “thinking things through beforehand,” and “wearing the right protective gear” are all good answers that come to mind right away.
Safety culture is basically about proactively increasing safe behaviors.
By defining these behaviors and then going ALL IN to ensure the right conditions are in place so that safe behaviors are reinforced MORE than risky behaviors, we move from reactive to proactive management of the work environment.
Some keys to safety work:
– Involve those exposed to the risks
– Ensure the right conditions (Organizational, systematic, and relational – in leadership)
– Reinforce safe behaviors
